Levetiracetam is a ketopyrrolidine derivative. It is an anti-epilepsy drug with a chemical structure different from the traditional anti-epilepsy drugs. Its anti-epilepsy function is strong. As one of the best sellers and a broad-spectrum anti-epilepsy drug, Levetiracetam can be used in the monotherapy of epilepsy and does not react with other anti-epilepsy drugs.
Results of both in vivo and in vitro tests show that Levetiracetam does not change the characteristic of cells or the nerve transfer function. The clinical application also reveals that Levetiracetam is effective against partial and general attack of epilepsy. Levetiracetam is currently the only reported anti-epilepsy drug that can prevent epilepsy attack. It has little side effect and great tolerance. As the representative of the new-generation anti-epilepsy drug, Levetiracetam is most frequently used drug in epilepsy treatment in the US.
To date, there are approximately 50,000,000 people suffering from epilepsy. It is estimated that about 2,400,000 people are diagnosed epilepsy annually. In high-income countries, the prevalence of newly identified epilepsy patients is 30-50 out of 100,000. The number is doubled in low and median-income countries. Therefore, the marketing prospect of Levetiracetam is quite broad.
